The Selma Art Guild’s Summer Juried Art Exhibition reception is set for Sunday, June 8 from 2-4 p.m. at the SAG Gallery.
The show will feature Selma and area artists with works in transparent, opaque, photography, 3-D and dry categories and prizes for winners including Best of Show $500, Best in Category $200, Second in Category $100 and Third in Category $50 at the gallery at 508 Selma Ave.
Featured will be at least 25 artists and 60 pieces of art. And the show will be judged by respected Montgomery artist and educator Carol Barksdale, whose creative work and dedication to the arts have made a lasting impact in Alabama’s artistic community.
Counties represented at the show will be Autauga, Dallas, Elmore, Montgomery and Wilcox.
Barksdale grew up in a military family traveling the world. She lived in Germany, Norway, the Philippines and Rome. She graduated high school from Marymount International School, a private school in Rome. She returned to the United States to finish college at the University of Alabama and has been painting professionally ever since.
Barksdale holds a BFA with a focus in English Literature and Art History from the University of Alabama. In 2011, her contributions were honored with a one-woman retrospective at the University’s Ferguson Gallery, showcasing 27 works spanning her career.
Since 2001, Carol has been represented by Gallery One Fine Art in Montgomery. She dedicated 25 years to teaching art in the Elmore County public school system and continues to share her passion for painting through classes in watercolor, oils, and acrylics at the Armory Learning Arts Center in Montgomery and the Art Mill in Millbrook.
Barksdale said of her work: “I want to give the viewers a sense of peace, calm and beauty in whatever scenes I depict. It is my desire that the sense of light, the colors and the harmony within the painting all draw the viewer into a calm and reflective place.”
Selma Art Guild President Cam Walker Guarino said, “We are honored to have Carol Barksdale serve as a juror for this year’s show, bringing her seasoned eye and deep appreciation for artistic expression to the judging process.”
The show is free and open to the public, and light refreshments will be available.
The Selma Art Guild was founded in the 1970s to provide art opportunities for Selma and area artists.
