About 1,000 runners, walkers and cyclists will be in Selma on March 21 to commemorate the 1965 Selma to Montgomery march at the Third Annual 51 Mile Selma to Montgomery Relay Race and Bike Ride. 

The race, part of the Civil Rights Race Seriesserves as a participatory commemoration of American history,” according to race co-founder Vergil Chames 

“The race has three purposes,” Chames said. “First is to educate people about the historic sites. Next is economic development. We’re involving about 90 local businesses in the event. And third is to encourage health and wellness.” Some race proceeds are donated to charities, he said.
