A 16-year-old has been taken into custody after a 15-year-old was shot and injured on Tuesday evening, said an online statement from the Selma Police Department. 

Officers from the department were dispatched to Vaughan Regional Medical Center around 7:30 p.m. where the victim was taken for injuries sustained by gunshots. 

The victim was later airlifted to the University of Alabama in Birmingham.

Officers learned that the shooting took place at the 400 Block of Martin Luther King Jr Street. With help from the Dallas County Sheriff's Office, a 16-year-old suspect was arrested. 

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with additional information is asked to call the Selma Police Department at 334-874-2125.
