This year's severe weather preparedness sales tax holiday will begin on Friday, Feb. 23 at 12:01 a.m. and will end on Sunday, Feb. 25 at midnight.Â
During this time items related to severe weather preparedness that are under $60 can be purchased free of the state sales tax. Generators that cost $1,000 or less can be bought without the 4% sales tax.Â
Items include batteries, certain types of radios, first aid kits, smoke detectors and others. Noneligible items are coin batteries and automobile and boat batteries. Â

The National Weather Service in Birmingham has issued a Fire
Weather Watch for Central Alabama, which is in effect from
Saturday morning through Saturday evening.
* WINDS...Northeast 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.
* RELATIVE HUMIDITY...As low as 19 percent.
* IMPACTS...The combination of a dry air mass and windy
conditions will result in critical fire weather conditions.
Outdoor burning is not recommended.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A Fire Weather Watch means that critical fire weather conditions
are forecast to occur. Listen for later forecasts and possible
Red Flag Warnings.
