The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) has awarded $17 million in Community Development Block Grants or CDBG funding to 44 communities, including those in the Black Belt. 

“Community Development Block Grants make a difference in Alabama communities by helping towns, cities and counties address some of their most urgent needs without stressing their regular budgets,” said Gov. Kay Ivey in an announcement. “I am pleased to award these funds for projects that will make a positive impact in communities across our great state.”

Small Cities

Hayneville in Lowndes County – $400,000 to improve its water system, including installing isolation valves to prevent water loss.

Butler in Choctaw County – $400,000 for sewer rehabilitation in the Riderwood Drive area, which will include replacing old sewer lines.

Pine Hill in Wilcox County – $400,000 to improve its water system with repairs to the water tank on Alabama Highway 5 and rerouting lines from the tank to the main water line.

Fulton in Clarke County – $400,000 to improve the water system including replacing filters and upgrading piping at the town well.

Louisville in Barbour County – $393,900 for a housing rehabilitation project as well as demolition and clearance of unsafe structures. It will also involve the replacing, repairing and upgrading houses owned by low-income residents who will pay a portion of the renovation.

McKenzie in Butler County – $400,000 to upgrade the water system including, lines, electrical components and constructing a well house.

Large Cities

Jackson in Clarke County – $315,000 to improve Warren Street and install curbing and gutters with stormwater inlets to improve drainage.

Counties

Greene County – $500,000 s to resurface 3.1 miles of roads: County Roads 74 and 107, Emerald Lane, Baron Road and Cooke Road.

Dallas County – $500,000 to improve water service in an unincorporated area of Selma at the former Craig Air Force Base by replacing an old and brittle water line that frequently breaks, with roads to be repaired in line-replacement areas.

Community Enhancements

Union Greene in County – $398,541 to construct a 40-by-50-foot building to be used as a community center on town-owned land behind the town hall.

Boligee in Greene County – $400,000 to construct a new playground, shade shelter and walking trail at Boligee Community Park.

Troy in Pike County – $400,000 to build a community center at Knox Street Park, which will be a 4,927-square-foot building to provide recreational and other opportunities.

Lisman in Choctaw County – $400,000 to convert the cafeteria at the former Lisman Junior High School into a community center

Planning Fund

Union Springs Bullock County – $40,000 to develop a new comprehensive city plan and update current zoning ordinances.

“The CDBG program is a highly competitive process during which local governments begin by examining their most crucial needs that will have a large impact on their communities and then apply for funding to address those needs,” said ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell. “ADECA joins with Gov. Ivey in congratulating those communities that were funded, and I applaud all communities that submitted applications.”
