The Black Belt Community Foundation (BBCF) has launched its Food for Families in the Black Belt initiative to address food shortages as SNAP benefits continue to be suspended during the government shutdown. 

According to an announcement from BBCF President & CEO Christopher Spencer the initiative seeks to rally its partners, volunteers and donors to deliver food in its service areas. 

"The ongoing governmental shutdown is causing many problems for more than 18,000 families across the 12 counties in which he serve," Spencer said in a message. "That's why the leadership at the (BBCF) and our board, we are making a call for action for all of our nonprofits, faith institutions, local businesses and local government institutions to get involved and do what we need to do to help our needy families."

The BBCF has applied for emergency support and activated a network of churches, nonprofits, and community organizations.
