The date of the Alabama River Chili Cook-off has been moved to make room for The Wild Game Cook-off.
Blackbelt Benefit Group recently announced that the popular Alabama River Chili Cook-off would return this fall as local businesses and organizations compete for the Region’s Best Chili, a title long held by Davis Henry and the Henry Brick Company.
As soon as the promotions went out, BBG realized that the date they selected competed with The Wild Game Cookoff hosted by the Alabama Wildlife Federation’s (AWF) Selma Chapter.
“We don’t want to compete with them,” BBG co-founder Clay Carmichael said. “We want to help them be successful, and they want to help us, too.”
As a result, BBG is moving the chili cook-off date to Thursday, Nov. 10 to give their friends with the AWF the stage for their annual event. The Wild Game Cookoff will be Thursday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. at Arts Revive’s Carneal Building,
Carmichael said these two organizations and events complement each other in that they both bring the community together and benefit other local organizations who work to improve the area.
BBG President Josh Wilkerson said moving the event may have other advantages. “You know this may fit our event a little better, for it to be nice and cool,” Wilkerson said. “Things are definitely going to heat up with all these teams competing downtown.”
No times have changed, but the deadlines and dates for the meetings have changed because they were based on the earlier event date. The deadline for sponsors is now Oct. 10, the deadline for teams is Oct. 19 and the team meeting is now Thursday, Nov. 3.
A $25 late registration fee will be added to any team joining between Oct. 19 and Nov. 3.
