The City of Selma plans to celebrate Civil Rights Movement icon Dr. Frederick Reese with several activities on March 15.

Reese was among the "Courageous Eight" during the Civil Rights Movements, comprising of Amelia Boynton, Ulysses S. Blackmon, James E. Gildersleeve, Rev. John D. Hunter, Rev. Henry Shannon, Earnest Doyle, and Marie Foster.

As president of the Dallas County Voters League he wrote the letter to the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that invited them to assist with the voting rights campaign in Selma.

Reese passed away in 2018 at the age of 88.

The Selma City Council recently declared March 21 to be F.D. Reese Day in honor of the icon. March 15 was originally declared but was moved at the request of Reese's family.

Selma Mayor James Perkin and Seventh District Representative Terri Sewell will attend the celebration.

The celebration will begin with a special presentation at 12 p.m. and will be followed by a grand caravan at 12:45 p.m. Line up will begin at Bloch Park on 108 West Dallas Ave. A virtual tribute will be held at 6 p.m.
