The City of Selma celebrated the Fourth of July on Sunday with a Stars & Stripes Honor Parade, festivities at the Riverwalk and fireworks.
The parade, sponsored by the Selma-Dallas County Chamber of Commerce, honored all first responders and emergency personnel, medical workers and teachers as well as all essential workers. Participating in the parade were Dallas County Sheriff Mike Granthum and the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department. Also Selma Police Chief Kenta Fulford and the Selma Police Department. The Selma-Dallas County Rescue squad and the Valley Grande Volunteer Fire Department were in the parade, as well as Dallas County EMA Director Toya Stiles. From the Medical profession, Selma Health and Rehab and the Rural Health Medical Program participated. Members of the Selma City Council were also in the parade.
The parade ended at Riverfront Park where there were a host of activities, and plenty to eat. There was the Food Village with something for everyone. There was Rojo Seafood, The Coffee Shop, Tisdale BBQ and Savory Edge all available in the Food Village.
Arts Revive had an Art Village where student artists were displaying their work along side of the work of professional artists. There was also body art and a children’s paint party.
In the Community Village, the Army National Guard set up a rock climbing wall for anyone daring enough to give it a try.
The event that the children in attendance seemed to enjoy the most was the official opening of the Splash Pad.
At its ribbon cutting ceremony, Selma Mayor James Perkins said a few words thanking the Evans administration for conceiving the splash pad project and the Melton administration for getting the project “about 80% completed.” He and Councilman Michael Johnson then cut the ribbon officially opening the Splash Pad. As soon as the gate was swung out of the way, excited kids poured in and enjoyed the cool water pouring over them.
On the stage of the amphitheater, the band Souled Out performed a concert and after that, the day culminated with the Red White and Boom Fireworks display.
