District Attorney Robert Turner Jr. donated equipment to the Perry County Sheriff’s Office to help identify and register sex offenders in the community.
The computer, iPad, desktop scanner and external hard drive were purchased with a grant from the Alabama Office of Prosecution Services by the Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering and Tracking.
Jon Moody, the Sex Offender Resource Prosecutor at the Office of Prosecution Services, applauded the program saying, “this grant provides updated technology to local law enforcement, enabling them to better monitor sex offenders and protect the citizens of Alabama.”
The computer system will also enhance the infrastructure of local law enforcement and allow for information sharing with other law enforcement agencies.
“We look forward to working closely with our law enforcement partners to further protect our community from these offenders,” Turner said in a statement on social media.
Turner also said sex offender registration and notification is a growing concern in the State of Alabama and that the number of sex offenders continues to rise.
“The increasing number of sex offenders, combined with the likelihood of recidivism place the residents of Alabama at risk, especially Alabama’s children,” he said. “To combat this Alabama took a major step by becoming compliant with the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act.”
Turner serves as District Attorney for Perry, Dallas, Hale, Bibb counties.
