Since its chartering in 1953, Selma Alumnae has endeavored to fulfill the public service mission espoused by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., founded in 1913.
As the first sorority in the area, Selma Alumnae has initiated and implemented events and activities to enhance, enrich, and uplift humanity since its inception.
Chartering member Margaret Moore and national-initiated honorary member Amelia Boynton Robinson are local heroines, trailblazers, icons, initiators, and engagers of “good trouble” who paved the way for contemporary women who embrace and implement the same principles.
In 2019, Selma Alumnae inaugurated the Boynton-Robinson & Margaret Moore Leadership Awards to commemorate their legacy. Each took “the road less traveled by” and made a difference. Individually, in the areas of economic mobility and educational equality, they excelled; collectively in the political, civic, and voting rights struggle, they gave their all. The awards symbolically pay homage to the honorees and commend contemporary leaders who are also implementers of deeds to uplift humanity.
The Luncheon speaker is Dr. Schnavia Smith Hatcher, the first Black woman dean at the University of Alabama School of Social Work. She is a graduate of Payne Elementary, Eastside Middle, and Selma High Schools. She has a BA in Psychology from Spelman College, an MSW from the University of Georgia, and a PhD from the University of Kansas. She has an intensive and extensive employment history, including being the inaugural director of the University of NC at Charlotte School of Social Work, where she established the Race and Social Equality Academy. At the University of Texas at Arlington, she founded the Center for African American Studies (the first of its kind in North Texas) and was the BSW Program Director at the University of Georgia.
