Educator and youth leader Demonte Purifoy has announced his candidacy for Selma City Council, Ward 7.
Purifoy said he is “driven by a vision for a safer, stronger and more united community.”
“Ward 7 needs more than just a representative—it needs someone who understands the issues and can provide real, lasting solutions,” Purifoy said in his announcement. “I’m running because we deserve a future where our children feel safe, where our families thrive and where everyone has a stake in the progress of our community.”
Purifoy’s announcement said with his “years of experience in youth development, public safety and community growth, he has dedicated his life to serving others—not politics. Demonte has stood on the front lines as a mentor, coach and church leader, helping families and youth build brighter futures.”
“This race is personal,” said Purifoy, a lifelong resident of Ward 7. “I’ve seen what our community has faced. I’ve felt the challenges of living in neighborhoods that need attention and care. But I also see the power and potential in Ward 7. It’s time for change, for safety, for unity—and I’m here to make it happen.”
Purifoy said his platform calls for empowering youth and families with real opportunity; building safer communities with a commitment to public safety and neighborhood patrols; and creating cleaner, healthier neighborhoods.
Incumbent Jannie Thomas has announced she is running to retain her seat in Ward 7.
Official qualifying begins on June 10 and closes on June 24. The election is set for Aug. 26.
