Tornado selma

Recovery has been progressing in Selma after the Jan. 12 tornado. 

FEMA has approved more than $10 million in grants to almost 2,000 Dallas County residents impacted by the Jan. 12 tornado as of July 25.

According to figures released by FEMA, the federal agency is working on these public assistance projects:

  • 13 city of Selma projects estimated at $7.5 million Federal share.
  • Dallas County has three obligated projects valued at $102,607 Federal share.
  • City of Selma has eight obligated projects valued at $775,757 Federal share.
  • Selma Schools has two obligated projects valued at $41,667.

FEMA is also working on projects related to individual assistance.

  • More than $4.2 million in disaster grants for 1,082 Dallas County residents who have uninsured and underinsured losses due to the Jan. 12 storm. FEMA says 1,800 Alabamians in 10 counties received $8.7 million in disaster financial assistance under the agency’s Individuals and Households Program because of the storm.  
  • More than $3.2 million in housing grants to 627 survivors in Dallas County. This will assist survivors in rebuilding or repairing their primary homes and provide the means for a safe place to stay while they consider their long-term housing options.
  • More than $2.4 million in home repair in Dallas County to 337 registrants.
  • More than $853,309 in rental assistance in Dallas County to 523 registrants.
  • More than $911,475 in grants in Dallas County to 783 survivors for “Other Needs Assistance,” which covers personal property losses, transportation, medical, dental and child-care costs.

“The city is compiling a list of (approximately 100) properties to demolish under Category B - Emergency Protective Measures,” according to a statement from FEMA. “FEMA will review the list for policy compliance.”

Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr. said, “City of Selma has worked alongside FEMA to ensure the citizens of Selma receives everything they should, and the city’s recovery process is in high gear. I want to thank President Biden and the federal delegation for their continued support of Selma.”
