The owners of Foscue House in Demopolis announced on Tuesday the historic restaurant is closing.
Daryl and Penny Bowden, who took over ownership three years ago, announced on Facebook that they "can no longer carry the burden of keeping it going," noting the late work hours and weekends.
Penny Bowden recently opened Miss Maggie's Market on U.S. 80 in Demopolis and will keep it open with daytime hours during the week. She asked customers to follow their activities at the new shop on Facebook.
"We were gonna finish out the month of April and give more notice but since opening Maggie’s Market, I simply cannot do both," she said.
Foscue House opened in 1840 and is named for Augustus Foscue of North Carolina who owned 3,000 acres in Marengo County and 137 slaves. Read more about it here.Â
