Harvesters of Hope (HOH) has added six new lawyers who will participate in the program in different counties throughout Alabama.
They are:
- Calvin Burroughs Dadeville (Tallapoosa County)
- Emily Milford in LaFayette (Chambers County) will begin later this year.
- Lee Ozmint in Livingston (Sumter County).
- Anna-Kate Thomas in Athens (Limestone County).
- Austin Underwood in Tuscumbia (Colbert County) will begin "in the near future."
- Sallie Jo Wright is expected to begin soon in Rainsville (DeKalb County).
Harvesters of Hope is described as a program that was launched to address shortages of lawyers in Alabama.
A statement from HOH cited data from the Alabama State Bar finding that more counties in the state have fewer than one attorney per 1,000 residents. The number is expected to lessen as more attorneys reach retirement age.
“These six new lawyers, added to the ten lawyers who had previously joined us, means in less than one and a half years, Harvesters of Hope will have placed lawyers in approximately 43% of Alabama’s ‘legal deserts,’" said HOH Board President Allison Skinner.
"These lawyers are furthering the mission of Harvester of Hope ‘to grow the legal profession in Alabama’s small towns and underserved communities; improve access to justice; advance the administration of justice; increase economic vitality; and revitalize Alabama’s small towns and underserved communities.’ These lawyers are becoming an integral part of their communities and having a positive impact.”
Lawyers in the program provide pro bono services to anyone who qualifies. HOH supports participants by providing access to practice management programs, business planning templates, budgeting and organizational tools, technology recommendations, and continuing legal education opportunities.
They receive complimentary professional memberships, ongoing training, mentorship, and a financial stipend, said the statement.
