The Heart of Alabama Food Bank (HAFB) has received a $100,000 donation from the City of Montgomery ahead of the Thanksgiving holidays.
A statement from city said that residents are experiencing food insecurities reportedly due to reductions in SNAP benefits when the government was shut down.
An estimated 53,000 people in Montgomery County and close to 4,000 federal employees in the city are currently dealing with food issues, the statement said.
“In response, the City has donated $100,000 to the Heart of Alabama Food Bank to help meet urgent needs,” said Mayor Steven Reed during the check presentation to the food bank. “This isn’t just a check—it’s a commitment. It’s our way of saying that no one in our city or our region should go hungry. Not during the holidays, not during a federal shutdown, and not on any ordinary day.”
The donation equates to approximately 500,000 meals, according to the statement.
“The $100,000 gift equates to 500,000 meals and the impact of that is hard for us to wrap our minds around," said Michael Colman, Chief Executive Officer of HAFB.
"I want to say how good it feels to be a part of a community where not only the citizens come together to donate of their means, but our local government is supporting us - giving us the strength, the encouragement, and the resources we need to provide for the most needy and most vulnerable in our community.”
