A heat advisory is in effect for most of the Black Belt region on Tuesday through 9 p.m.

According to the Weather Forecast Office in Birmingham heat index values are expected to be as high as 108 degrees and afternoon thunderstorms may develop.

During this time the Dallas County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) advises drinking fluids, staying in air-conditioned rooms, staying out of the sun, and checking with relatives and neighbors.

"Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening," EMA adds. "Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water."
