A man who was convicted in the murder of a Selma High School student in 2007 escaped from a minimum-security corrections center in Mobile County before surrendering to authorities.

According to the Associated Press, Jeffery Strugg, 31, apparently escaped from a community-based facility in Prichard on Sunday. He later surrendered to authorities without incident when he was found.

In 2007 Strugg was convicted of killing Dewone Smiley, who was 15 at the time. Strugg was 18 when he was was sentenced to 29 years for the murder.

According to an AL.com report Strugg was classified as a minimum-out prisoner, meaning that he was deemed to not be a threat to others and could work in off-property details without correctional officer supervision.

In the report District Attorney Michael Jackson criticized the decision to assign him to a low-risk facility, calling it "ridiculous".

He will be considered for parole in December.
