A Montgomery man was sentenced to 40 years in a federal prison for a shooting that turned deadly at a gas station in 2025.

According to an announcement from U.S. Attorney Kevin Davidson, officers heard gunshots coming from two vehicles at the gas station near Zelda Road on Jan. 7 of that year.

When they arrived three suspects were see fleeing the scene. A fourth individual was found at the scene who died from a gunshot wound.

Rodriques Javaun Humphrey, 20, was later identified as one of the suspects. He reportedly was in possession of a rifle that he used to fire at responding officers as he fled.

"Deputies with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, along with an MPD K-9 unit, responded to assist in locating the fleeing suspects," said the announcement.

"One individual complied with officers’ commands and was taken into custody. Humphrey, however, continued to flee but was ultimately apprehended. Officers recovered the rifle he had been carrying."

Plastic bags containing marijuana and a digital scale were found along with an AR-style pistol equipped with a machinegun conversion device. Its serial number was scratched off.

On August 13 in 2025 Humphrey pleaded guilty to illegally possessing a machinegun, possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

One of the suspects, Ladarius Lamar Knight, pleaded guilty to his role and still faces a maximum of 15 years.
