HELENA, Mont. – Governor Greg Gianforte has appointed John A. Mercer to the Twentieth Judicial District Court, serving Lake and Sanders Counties.
Gov. Gianforte expressed confidence in Mercer, stating, "John served the people of the Twentieth Judicial District well when I appointed him to serve his community last year, and I’m glad he was willing to do so once again."
Mercer, a graduate of the University of Montana and Northwestern University School of Law, has been an attorney for 42 years with Turnage Mercer & Wall in Polson. He also served as President of Heritage Management Co.
The appointment process began when the chief justice of the Supreme Court of Montana notified the governor of a vacancy on December 26, 2024. Following this, Gov. Gianforte opened applications for the position on December 30, 2024.
After receiving five applications, a 15-day public comment period was initiated, concluding on February 12. An advisory council of attorneys and community leaders was formed on February 14 to help review candidates.
