Animal charity rescues 19 cats from aftermath of Hurricane Lowell in Hawaii.

Hurricane Lowell caused widespread damage across the Hawaiian islands of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau on Sept. 7, 2026.

The storm was described as one of the strongest to hit the islands in 34 years, affecting 67 homes.

The first group of 19 cats arrived at San Diego International Airport on the evening of Oct. 13, 2026.

San Diego Humane Society staff met the felines at the airport before transporting them to the organization's locations in Escondido and Oceanside.

The cats are settling in well at the North County campuses, with 11 in Escondido and eight in Oceanside. Staff have reported that they are very social and outgoing.

Once the cats are ready for their next chapter, they will be made available for adoption.

A second transport of 20 cats is scheduled to arrive in the coming weeks, bringing the total number of Hawaiian felines relocated to 39.
