Sam Forstag

MONTANA - Sam Forstag, the smokejumper and union leader running to represent Montana's 1st Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, declared victory in Tuesday's Democratic primary.

The Associated Press has not officially called the race, but Forstag's opponent Ryan Busse issued a statement online conceding.

"I want to offer heartfelt congratulations to Sam Forstag for winning the Democratic primary," Busse wrote. "He ran an impressive campaign and I am excited to support him as he fights for our community."

"We did it, Montana," Forstag said. "I couldn’t have done it without each of you who gave your time, talked to neighbors, and pitched in. What we built belongs to all of us. This is about the fight for working Montanans and now we take it on to November. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart."

Forstag will face Republican Aaron Flint on the ballot in November.
