New charges have been filed in an ongoing investigation of a body found along a residential road in Demopolis in April 2023.
Two Marengo County residents were arrested and charged with abuse of a corpse by the Major Crimes Unit of the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office in connection of the body found on Powe Road on April 2023 that is believed to be Damon Gibson. Gibson, who lived in Linden at the time, was last seen at the Demopolis Fitness Center in 2022.
The first arrested and charged with abuse of a corpse was Taylor Danielle Sheffield, 33, of Demopolison Dec. 18. The second was Michael Steven Bozeman, 39, ofGallion on Dec. 30. Bozeman was charged with murder of Gibson when the body was found in 2023, but he has been out on bond since.
District Attorney Rachel England said DNA results from the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences have not come back.
“We’re prettypositiveit’s Damon,” England said. “We have good reason to believe the remains found in 2023 are his.”
In addition to the murder and abuseofacorpsecharges, Bozeman faces a separate charge forpossessinga firearm while out on bond for a violent offense. England said the charge stems from a new Alabama law enacted in October 2025, which prohibits individuals on bond for violent crimes, such as domestic violence or murder, frompossessingfirearms. England described the enforcement of the new law as “another win” for public safety efforts in the district.
England noted that these arrests mark the first major case handled by the district’s newly formed Major Crimes Unit.
