Perry County Commission hires accounting firm for audit help

The Perry County Commission hired an accounting firm to help get the county’s books organized for a state audit. 

The commission voted to hire Elvis and Wilkerson CPA to do a one-time, $500 review of county finances to help prepare for the upcoming state audit. The county is five or six years behind on audits. 

The commission approved a revised garbage truck rental agreement that sets a $300-per-day rental fee. Commissioners authorized the chairman to sign alternative payment agreements between meetings. 

A roofing contract for the Barnett King Building was tabled again after questions resurfaced about whether Yellowhammer SPF Installation Services holds the required Alabama contractor’s license for projects over $100,000. The roofing bid was $129,250. The board voted to table the matter until the next meeting and seek guidance from county attorney Prince Chestnut.

County Engineer DeAndrea Kimbrough presented estimates for work on David Street and Dogwood Lane inside the city of Marion. Marion agreed to pay $80,950 for materials while the county would handle labor and equipment costs. Commissioners voted to proceed after Marion pays the material cost up front.

Commissioners also discussed a dilapidated building known as the old Quickway store. The board agreed to contact the landowner and the city of Marion before taking any action, noting the property is privately owned. 

The engineer reported that patching work has begun on several county roads and that the county’s accounts are “pretty much clear.” He also provided updates on a community development block grant project and a $17,000 inmate grant.

Commissioners voted to set the chief deputy’s salary at $56,600 annually after noting he had already been serving in the role without proper compensation.

Longtime clerical employee Thompson Smith resigned effective July 24. The commission authorized the probate judge to hire Gleason James on a 60-day contract from July 29 through Sept. 29 at $15 an hour. Commissioners also agreed that any severance owed to Smith would be paid. 

Several items were carried over, including the IT contract, courthouse lock changes and advertising for exterior painting work at the King Center.
