The City of Selma will celebrate the reopening of Ronnie Sharpe Park Basketball Court with a grand opening and ribbon cutting tomorrow at 9 a.m.

The park was renovated following a resolution from the city in 2023 honoring the Big Ten Conference, which partnered with the city to renovate the park.

“We’re thrilled to return to the City of Selma for the fourth consecutive summer, and this year on the 60th anniversary of Bloody Sunday” said Omar Brown, Big Ten Conference Senior Vice President for Community and Impact. “Not only can we provide transformative, life-shaping experiences for more than 150 student-athletes and administrators, we want to make a lasting impact in a community that has welcomed us with open arms.”

The park features new court surfacing, fresh striping, improved backboards, and "community-driven enhancements that support health, wellness, and youth engagement," said an announcement on Friday.

“The Big Ten Conference stands committed to not only commemorating Selma’s past but also investing in its future,” said Mayor James Perkins Jr. “Their investment in our parks and youth-centered programming helps create safe, inspiring, and equitable spaces for the next generation.”

The ribbon cutting will feature remarks from local officials, Big Ten representatives, and community partners.

The park is located on Voeglin Avenue in Selma.
