Selma Seal

The Selma City Council was briefed by representatives from Auburn University (AU) and the nonprofit Fifty Fund regarding its transportation safety plan during a work session on March 20.

An announcement from the city said that the meeting marked a "milestone" in the plan in which an overview was given detailing safety action planning, potential traffic safety countermeasures and funding options.

"The safety of our residents is top priority," said Mayor James Perkins Jr. in the announcement. "We are committed to making our city safer for pedestrians, and yesterday's discussion with Fifty Fund was an important step to realizing this goal."

"We're excited to move forward with the implementation of these proposed measures and continue building a safer, more walkable Selma."

The announcement stated that the next phase is to work with the nonprofit and the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) to receive funding, identify locations for improvements and "implement changes that directly address the needs of Selma's pedestrians."

It also stated that updates will be provided as the project moves forward.
