A group of Selma residents who are victims of crime will be present at a gathering at the Alabama State Capitol in an event that was organized by the late Mark Myles, who was killed in January.

The event, called Survivors Speak Alabama, will begin with a press conference and a rally to urge lawmakers to address public safety. There will also be a vigil for victims killed in violent crimes.

It will be hosted by Crime Survivors Speak, reportedly the largest network of its kind in the state with more than 200,000 members. It seeks to establish chapters in Selma, Birmingham and Montgomery.

Speakers will include Ainka Jackson, founding executive director of Selma Center for Nonviolence, Truth, and Reconciliation (SCNTR) and mothers of victims lost to violence.

The bus send off for victims is scheduled for Feb. 24 at 8:30 a.m. at SCNTR's location on 8 Mulberry Road in Selma.

The event will begin at 12 p.m. at the capitol on 600 Dexter Avenue in Montgomery.

EDIT: This story was updated to clarify the times that the event will start.
