Shoppers in downtown Selma have a new incentive to explore local businesses this holiday season with the launch of the Selma Downtown Passport program.

The initiative, which starts on Black Friday, brings together 14 retail stores in Selma’s downtown district. Customers can pick up a passport at any participating shop, collect stamps with each purchase and compete for gift certificates.

The first shopper to completely fill their passport wins a $100 gift certificate to their favorite downtown store. All completed passports turned in by Dec. 20 will be entered for a chance to win a $300 gift certificate.

The promotion was organized by the Selma Redevelopment Authority.

This is all about encouraging people to shop small, shop local and discover stores they may have never visited before,” SRA Director Sarah Aghedo said. “We really tried to include a broad array of retail options downtown.”

The lineup of participating businesses stretches across Broad Street and beyond. They are 5 and Dime, Carter Drug, Cotton House, Gallery 905, Gray’s Furniture, Lena’s Floral, On Time Fashions, Papa’s Pawn Shop, Pilcher McBride, Queen City Market, Selma Beauty Supply, Southall’s, Spiller Furniture and Summerlin Hardware.

“We have a lot of options downtown that people may not realize,” Aghedo said. This is a fun way to explore them while supporting hometown businesses.”

Restaurants were intentionally excluded from this round, with plans for a separate dining-focused promotion in the future.

Passports must be completed and handed in by the end of business on Dec. 20. Flyers and instructions are available at each store, and questions can be directed to the SRA at 334-407-9313.
