In a world of firsts, the 2021 graduating class at Selma High School became the first to matriculate from this phase of their education in the virtual realm of academic interaction.
They were rewarded with a commencement ceremony together in the physical realm. The scholars also became the first to graduate from the facilities of the Wallace Community College-Selma campus.
Valedictorians Jasmine Jackson and Breya Johnson and Salutatorian Taylor White all challenged their classmates to step into the future and be the change that society needs to move forward.
Guest speaker Adonis Bozeman, University of Mississippi Director of Student Recruitment, inspired the graduates to go forth with the expectation that failures may occur in their endeavors, but to embrace them to succeed at a higher level.
Parents, family, alumni, friends and well-wishers gathered by the multitudes in the mid-spring warmth to celebrate the emerging leaders and acknowledge the accomplishments of all graduates.
Selma City Schools Superintendent Dr. Avis Williams awarded the prestigious Melson Charitable Trust Scholarships to Jackson, Johnson, White, Antwun Tyrique Rumph, and Tatyana Janeen Martin before the presentation of the class.
Amid the pomp and circumstance, Selma High School principal and almnus Stoney Pritchett applauded and congratulated a class that endured a difficult and trying time in the COVID-19 era. He extended gratitude to all stakeholders who made collective strides in assisting students with the challenge to meet their goals. Pritchett went on to commend the budding scholars for their resilience and “Saint” toughness. He concluded his charge to the graduates with the quote; “If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door.”
