John E. Grayson, senior pastor at Gospel Tabernacle Church in Selma, was recognized with an award from the Small Business Administration (SBA) for his disaster recovery efforts.Â
The Phoenix Award recognizes those who help and contribute in the aftermath of natural disaster events, said an press release from SBA.Â
Grayson was honored for his response to the tornado of 2023 as he provided shelter and helped with clearing debris, securing housing and assisting survivors with access to aid.Â
He also used the church van as a mobile assistance unit to guide officials through disaster zones.
"Under his leadership, the Gospel Tabernacle Disaster Assistance Center repaired over 25 homes, distributed $120,000 in aid, and hosted the SBA’s Business Recovery Center," said the press release. "His tireless efforts provided not only physical relief but also unity and hope during Selma’s recovery."
