Selma police are advising residents to take measures following a series of thefts targeting Kia vehicles.Â
"This problem is not just local — it is a nationwide trend affecting many communities across the country," said a post on the Selma Police Department's social media. "We are actively investigating these incidents and want to provide our community with safety tips to help prevent further crimes."
The post reported that the department is working with Kia, which has acknowledged the thefts. From the social media page:Â
They introduced a free software upgrade for many Kia models (those without factory engine immobilizers) which changes how the vehicle’s alarm and ignition system behave for example, extending the alarm duration and requiring the key in the ignition to start the vehicle.
For vehicles that are not eligible for the software upgrade, Kia has rolled out a hardware fix called an ignition cylinder protector. This device reinforces the ignition cylinder body to make it more difficult for thieves to tamper with it.
Kia is also distributing free steering wheel locks to affected owners and law enforcement agencies to help deter theft.
In the meantime police are advising residents to do the following:Â
Remove valuable items in cars from sight
Install security cameras around the homeÂ
Use aftermarket alarm systems and trackersÂ
Avoid leaving plug-in trackers in plain sight
Consider using immobilizers or kill-switches that prevent the engine from starting without authorizationÂ
