Selma police give bikes during community outreach event Saturday

More than 60 attended the event at Bloch Park.

The Selma Police Department gave back to the community on Saturday with a bike and toy giveaway at Bloch Park.

The event was organized by Sgt. Crum of the Selma police department. Bikes were donated by individuals and a business and through funds raised by citizens giving donations to the police department, said Hatwatha McGhee, community leader who helped organize the event.

About 60 people and children came to the event. The department plans to make the event annual.

“This is just one of many endeavors to show they go above and beyond the call of duty,” McGhee said.

The Selma Fire Department also attended. McGhee said the officers intentionally came out of uniform so the children can enjoy time with them as regular citizens.

Also in attendance was Chief Kenta Fulford, Mayor James Perkins Jr., Councilman Michael Johnson and many others.
