Selma residents are invited to the “Heart & Kidney Lunch and Learn” hosted by the Selma Chapter of the Links, Inc. at Vaughan Regional Medical Center (VRMC) on Feb. 28.

Guest speakers include Dr. Steve Allyn, Cardiologist, Dr. Andreia White, Family Physician, and Ms. Dyphelia Thrash.

The event is themed around the relationship between heart and kidney health, as well as prevention and early intervention.

It is sponsored by the Selma Chapter with support from Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, and the Black K.A.R.E. program funded by Vantive.

A press release from the chapter said that heart and kidney disease can cause diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and family history.

It cited data from the National Kidney Foundation saying that 35% of African American adults are diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD) despite being 13% of the U.S. population.

It also said that:

  • More than 800,000 Americans die from heart disease each year.
  • About 18.2 million adults in the U.S. have coronary artery disease, the most common type of heart disease.
  • High blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, and obesity are major risk factors.
  • African Americans are at higher risk for heart disease and related complications.
  • Diabetes and high blood pressure are the most common causes of CKD and heart disease.
  • Many people with CKD or heart disease do not experience symptoms until the disease is advanced.
  • Early detection and lifestyle changes—such as healthy eating, regular exercise, and managing blood pressure—can significantly reduce risk.
  • Smoking, high cholesterol, and excessive alcohol use also increase risk for both diseases.

"The involvement of the Selma Chapter delivers essential education, screenings, and preventive resources to the region, enabling families to identify risk factors early and access care that supports improved heart and kidney health outcomes," said Selma Links chapter president, Dr. Patricia Robinson.

The free event will be held at the Vaughan Regional Medical Towers Classroom at 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Click here to register.
