Members of the Selma branch of AmeriCorps were honored at the Selma City Council meeting March 13.

March 9 through March 15 is national AmeriCorps Week, which prompted Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr. to create a proclamation honoring AmeriCorps for their work in Selma. The proclamation was read at the city council meeting by Selma City Council President Billy Young.

“Since AmeriCorps’ founding in 2000 in the city of Selma, more than 700 Dallas County AmeriCorps members have served more than 650,000 hours,” the proclamation states. “Last year, in the city of Selma, 28 national service members of various ages and backgrounds helped to meet local needs in more than 10 locations in our city, by repairing homes and assisting citizens with information on home ownership and housing repair.”

About a dozen AmeriCorps members attended the city council meeting with their leader, Teresa Carter.
