The state may step in and assist Greene County with funding to start back the ambulance service that shut down on July 4.

State Sen. Bobby Singleton, who represents the area, told news agencies the state has funds to bring two new ambulances to the county and added the state ambulance association will sell two ambulances to the county for $70,000.

Singleton told WBRC that the Greene County Health Authority would cover half or $35,000 of the cost of the ambulances with the state matching the remaining amount.

However, he said the effort is a “Band-Aid” that doesn’t come with sustainable funds for long-term support.

Greene County Emergency Medical Services announced in a social media post on July 4 that the agency “has been forced to temporarily cease all operational services” due to “a critical lack of funding.”

The chairman of the Greene County Commission told WBRC that one emergency vehicle was responding to 911 calls but will only stabilize patients until a mutual aid vehicle from neighboring Pickens or Marengo County could get there.
