Salute Selma received 160 refurbished laptops from AT&T and Human IT to be given to students in Camden, Haynesville and Selma.

“Equipping students with devices is a strategic step toward a more connected and informed society, where no child is left behind in the ever-evolving landscape of education,” said Catrena Carter, president, Salute Selma. “By leveling the playing field, we empower students with the tools they need to thrive and open pathways to success.”

A press release from AT&T said that the company is distributing laptops to "help bridge the digital divide" by equipping 20,000 in the country as they go back to school.

"In today’s world, access to technology is as fundamental as access to textbooks,” said State Senator Robert Stewart. “Ensuring our students have access to devices is crucial for bridging the digital divide and providing equal educational opportunities.”

The press release adds that 15% of households in Alabama lack a connection to the internet or connected devices, causing the divide.

“We are most grateful for this partnership and support from AT&T,” said Joseph Pettway, Wilcox County Board of Education President. “It will further enhance our efforts to make academic progress and allows a child to receive a helping hand versus a handout.”

The effort by AT&T is called the the AT&T Connected Learning® and aims to connect 25 million people to the internet through a $5 billion investment.

“AT&T is proud to collaborate with organizations like Salute Selma to help close the digital equity gap in Alabama,” said Cleo Washington, vice president, AT&T Alabama. “Connectivity is vital for students, and we’re glad we can provide these resources to those that need them most.”
