Jeremy Burge, a tractor mechanic from Greensboro, is recovering from a brutal stabbing that occurred on July 15 at the Demopolis Walmart, where he had stopped to buy snacks after work.

The attack left Burge with life-threatening injuries, including deep abdominal lacerations, a punctured liver and bowel damage. His daughter Autumn Burge recounted the harrowing ordeal in a recent interview, describing the chaos of that day and the long road to recovery that followed.

According to Autumn, Burge intervened when a woman armed with a crowbar and knife began attacking other shoppers. In an effort to protect a coworker, Burge tackled the assailant, only to be stabbed in the abdomen.

He was airlifted to DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, where surgeons performed emergency surgery. His recovery has been complicated by MRSA-related staph infections and multiple hospital remissions.

Despite the trauma, Burge’s family has found strength in community support.

Pride Forney, a local organizer, has helped coordinate a benefit concert to assist with medical expenses and lost income. The event will take place Sunday, Oct. 5 at 5 p.m. at The Stable, located at 1120 Main St. in Greensboro. Performers include Tyler Sellers, Jason Irvin (also known as Hawk Music) and Chip Spencer’s bluegrass group.

Admission is $10, with all proceeds going directly to the Burge family. Donations can also be made via GoFundMe under “Jeremy Burge” or at a local bank account being set up for those unable to attend.

Jeremy didn’t hesitate to help someone in danger,” Forney said. “Now it’s our turn to show up for him.”

The Stable, often called the heart of Greensboro, will host the concert on its back patio, offering food, drinks and a chance for the community to come together in support of a man many are calling a hero.
