Temekia Sykes, who has worked in public service for 24 years, announced she is running for Mayor of Selma.
Sykes said in her campaign announcement, “This campaign is about delivering results, not just promises. For too long, we've heard the same promises, but little has been done to bring real change to Selma. I am committed to leading with action—not just words.”
“I will bridge the gap between the mayor’s office and the city council, creating an environment of open communication and cooperation,” Sykes said. “No longer will we see divisive arguments that stall progress.”
“With nine years of experience as the City Council Administrative Assistant, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with all nine council members and serving as the liaison between the council and mayor’s office,” Sykes said. “I understand the importance of creating a transparent and efficient government that works for the people, and I am well-equipped to lead with this knowledge.”
Sykes said she would improve community policing efforts and increase recreation programs for children, which she said could lead to less gun violence among youth.
She said she would address the “number of dilapidated buildings, particularly in high-traffic areas. These structures not only create an eyesore, but also reflect poorly on our community, especially as tourists visit our historic city.”
Improving mental health services would help address homelessness, she said. Addressing these issues would lead to more economic development, she said.
