Wannabe Rescued, a Dallas County dog rescue nonprofit organization, is offering free spay and neuter for pet owners in Dallas County for both dogs and cats.

Lorraine Alexander, founder of Wannabe Rescued, said pet owners can choose their favorite veterinarian clinic and handle the procedure while the nonprofit covers the cost.

“We use all the local vets,” she said. “We use North Side Animal Clinic, Selma Animal Hospital and Valley Creek Vet.”

Pets need to be up to date on vaccinations before they can have the procedure or at the time of the surgery.

To participate, just fill out an application at a clinic or message Wannabe Rescued on social media or email wannaberescued@aol.com for an application.

Alexander said though Wannabe Rescued is still helping to find forever homes for homeless pets, they are focusing on spreading the word about getting pets spayed and neutered and helping to get it done.

Dallas County has a problem with a high number of stray animals. And vet bills can be very high. Alexander said, “We really feel like in the long run this is going to help decrease the number of animals going into the shelter.”

Alexander said vaccinations are important to prevent any diseases and rabies. She pointed out the case of a wild raccoon in Lowndes County with rabies that attacked a man. If that raccoon attacks a pet that is not vaccinated they will get it.
