The Region 2 Wilcox Academy Wildcats defeated the Region 1 Southern Academy Cougar 49-12 at home in round 2 of the AISA Class A State Football Championship Playoffs to advance to the state finals.

The Region 2 Wilcox Academy Wildcats defeated the Region 1 Southern Academy Cougar 49-12 at home in round two of the AISA Class A State Football Championship Playoffs on Thursday, Nov. 9 for a shot at the state crown.

The Wildcats will face defending state champion Region1 Lowndes Academy Rebels for the state crown on Nov.16 at 1 p.m. at the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery. 

Lowndes Academy defeated Region 2 Sparta Academy in round 1 by a score of 47-0 and Region 2 Jackson Academy in round 2 by a score of 48-14.

Wilcox Academy defeated Region1 Lakeside in round 1 by a score of 23-16.

Against Southern Academy, Wilcox racked up 391 yards of total offense including 315 yards rushing and 76 yards passing.

J.P. Beck rushed for 169 yards and four touchdowns. Julian Curry had 111 yards on the ground with a touchdown. Beck also passed for two touchdowns to Turner Jordan.

Jordan also had five catches and kicked seven extra points.

Jim Vick led the way on defense with 14 tackles and two fumble recoveries. And Cam Swanner added 12 tackles followed by Curry with 10.

Wilcox Academy Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Lebo Jones said following Thursday night’s win, “I'm so proud of these boys. They came, showed up and showed out tonight. We give God all the glory.”

“We are very excited around here,” Jones said. “Lowndes is the two- time defending state champions. They have a great team. I'm very proud for our kids, school and community. It’s been since 2003 that Wilcox Academy has been in the State Championship game.”
