Selma resident Cindy Owens brings a wide range of experience and expertise in African American culture - drama, poetry and music – and Black History to her work with students and churches throughout the Black Belt.

Promoting this year’s theme, “African Americans in the Arts,” Owens will be the keynote speaker for the Black History program at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Autauga County Sunday, Feb 25 at 10 a.m.

A native of Orrville, she also is working with students at her alma mater Keith High School to expand their understanding of the rich African American culture and prepare programs for the faculty and students. Her work at Keith teaching poetry and drama over the years has resulted in numerous awards, including recognition from the National Endowment for the Arts.

“My passion is helping a new generation understand the beauty and depth of African American culture through its poets, singers, playwrights and leaders. There is so much beauty to experience in for example the poetry of Maya Angelou or the great Black Spirituals, like ‘Wade in the Water.’ It is all accessible – and meaningful,” she said.

Owens is retired from positions with the Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Mich., and the City of Detroit Office of Chief Investigator. She taught language arts in Detroit public schools for 14 years and has given presentations throughout the Black Belt. Last spring, she worked with students at the afterschool program in Vredenburgh to learn and prepare to sing spirituals for a Juneteenth celebration.

Owens is available to speak and teach in school or church programs at any time. She can be reached at cindyowens85@yahoo.com
