Selma City Schools is mourning the loss of a 16-year-old sophomore who passed away Friday night.

In an announcement on social media, Superintendent Zickeyous Byrd reported the death of AuTerrious Walter, a "bright and promising" student who "displayed so much potential and his absence leaves a void that will be felt by many."

Byrd called his death a tragedy to the entire school community and said counseling services will be available next week for students who need assistance processing their grief.

"It is vital that we unite and support each other during this difficult time," Byrd said.

Byrd also urged privacy for Walter's family.

School officials confirmed Walter was the victim of a shooting on Wednesday night that caused a brain injury.
