Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr. has appointed the former interim police chief to serve as assistant chief in the department.

In a statement released on Monday, Perkins named Johnathan T. Cole interim assistant police chief. He had served as interim chief for Kenta Fulford during the two months he was on administrative leave before winning a disciplinary hearing in late June.

He replaces Natasha Fowlkes, who resigned last week after being placed on administrative leave because of a complaint of wrongdoing. While she was cleared, she left and took a position as school resource officer at Selma High.

Cole comes from the Dallas County Sheriff Department, where he has been serving as the assistant chief.

"The City of Selma officially welcomes Chief Cole as Assistant Chief of Police and look forward to the future progress and synergism within the Selma Police Department," Perkins said in a statement.
