Selma mayor sets public budget meeting for Monday

Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr. said he wants “the people to see our proposal and to understand ‘why’ we are proposing this budget” July 5 at 5 p.m. at Wallace Community College Selma.

The mayor will present another proposed budget in a public meeting on Monday at 6:30 p.m. in council chambers.

Mayor James Perkins Jr. is asking for public input about the budget that his team is presenting after several meetings with the city council in an effort to work together to come up with an agreed budget.

In a statement on Thursday, Perkins' office says his team presented their proposed budget for the next fiscal year (FY2023-2024) to the community on last Wednesday. Perkins states, “I thoroughly appreciate the citizens who came out to become informed about what is being proposed and for providing their very insightful feedback. The changes we are proposing are major and we want all citizens to know ‘why’ we are making this budget proposal.”

Last Friday, the city council received the proposed budget and the mayor and city council agreed to hear the mayor and his team's presentation of their proposal to the city council on  July 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the city council chambers, City Hall, second floor.

“This budget cycle is much different than others prior, it seems this time everyone will be discussing one budget version and this is a good thing," Perkins said in a statement. "I am strongly encouraging open public dialog; this will only make the final budget stronger. This meeting is also open to the public."

There will be another public forum after this one to receive citizen participation.
