Morgan finishes third in Pepsi Classic Baseball Tournament played at home

Morgan academy baseball finished third in the Pepsi Classic Baseball Tournament held Thursday, Friday and Saturday at home, going 3-1 in tournament play. Wilcox Academy finished second, falling short in the championship game to Bessemer Academy.

I thought we played well,” Morgan Academy Head Baseball Coach Stephen Clements said. “We still have a long way to go to get to where we want to be, but they (his team) are getting better every day.”

As for his Senators, Clements said, “I thought all of our pitchers that hit the mound threw well – Andrew Thomas, T.B Clements, Davis Vardaman, Matthew Hand and Hayden Roberts.”

Clements said, “I thought we had some really good approaches at the plate, and we are starting to swing the bat a little better.”

Baron Frazier, John Allen Ingram, TB Clements, Davis Vardaman, Andrew Thomas, C.J. Crocker and Hunter Sheehan all went to the plate and delivered timely hits and battles. Frazier pounded a three-run homer against Russell Christian as a freshman, and Crocker hit a walk off single to beat Russell.

Clements said, “The Pepsi Classic was a huge success, and I would like to thank everyone that helped make it successful.” He noted Ryan Stone for bringing his smoker and taking time off to smoke the meat. Tommy Smitherman, Kevin Jones and Jeremy Sheehan also helped.

He also thanked Coach Lebo Jones and athletic director Danny Raines.

He further thanked Michelle Mouring for all the help in the concession stand and for all the Diamond Dolls who spent three days working extremely hard, as well as Kayle Grace Whitiker and Sarah Thomas who helped with the field.
