The Burton Panthers took their first loss of the season on Friday in a tough 37-36 defeat against Iola in District 13-2A-II play.
Iola threw an incomplete pass as time expired in the fourth quarter with Burton holding a 36-34 lead. However, a pass interference penalty called against Burton gave the Bulldogs an untimed down from the Panthers' 7-yard line.
Iola (6-3, 5-1 district) kicked a game-winning 24-yard field goal down the middle of the uprights on the final play to win the game and pull even with Burton in the district standings at 5-1.
Burton (8-1, 5-1 district) got another big night from junior quarterback Kayden Patterson. He tallied five all-purpose touchdowns, including four scores on the ground among his 17 carries for 145 yards. The junior also completed five of his 12 passes for 88 yards and a touchdown.
Caleb Nossaman caught Burton's lone passing touchdown on a 36-yard strike in the second quarter.
Nossaman's catch was Burton's first score of the night after Iola ran the ball into the end zone twice in the first quarter.
Patterson added a four-yard rushing score later in the second quarter to give Burton a 21-14 halftime lead.
His final two rushing scores came in the fourth quarter. Simank followed Patterson's final touchdown with a two-point conversion that gave the Panthers a 36-34 lead before Iola's final drive.
Rueben Rodriguez complemented Patterson's work on the ground with 48 yards on seven carries. Maleek Bibby added 27 yards on two carries while Braydon Martin earned 15 yards on three carries.
Martin also caught Burton's other four receptions for 52 yards.
Burton still has a chance to claim a share of the district championship next week when it hosts undefeated No. 8 Granger. Kickoff from Panther Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
