The Dumas Demon varsity football team fell to the Randall Raiders 27-14 in the district opener in Canyon Thursday, Oct. 10. Quarterback Colton Mills finished with 200 yards passing and a score and ZJ Jara finished with 40 yards and a score on the ground.
The Raiders opening drive was a slow and methodical one bleeding well over half the first quarter ending with an eight-yard touchdown pass from Kaison Benton to Phoenix Sherwood for a 7-0 lead with 5:20 left in the quarter.Â
Randall added to its lead with 4:34 left in the first half with a Drayden Ray one-yard touchdown run to lead 14-0. After stopping the Demons’ offense the Raiders extended the lead with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Benton to Brekken Ireland to lead 21-0 after a failed two-point try.
Dumas was putting a drive together to try and get on the board before the half ended but Randall’s defense came up with a big play as Jevin Gallegos intercepted a pass from Mills and took it to the house for a 74-yard pick-six to lead 27-0 with the failed two-point try going into the half.
The Demons took the ball for the opening drive of the second half and capped it off with a two-yard touchdown run from Zj Jara to trail the Raiders 27-7. With the rest of the quarter going scoreless the Demons cut into the lead more as Mills connected with Chris Jimenez for a 17-yard touchdown to trail 27-14, which would be the final.
The Demons drop their second game of the season and its first in district play. The defense shut out the Raiders in the second half as the offense made plays but mistakes hurt them in the end.
Dumas will be back in Happy State Bank Stadium next week when they play the Canyon Eagles Friday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. The Demons sit at 4-2 overall and 0-1 in district play.
