School of Discovery

A grand reopening will be held for the new $17 million School of Discovery in Selma on July 31.

At 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. there will be a special viewing and ribbon cutting by invitation only, followed by an open house and "School Bash" from 10:15 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Featured will be more than 40 community partners and vendors represented, as well as live STEM demonstrations, a raffle drawing and a school supply giveaway.

"This is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect, explore the enhancements, and see how we’re shaping the future of our school," said a post on social media by the school.

Dr. Mashika Tempero-Culliver was named principal in February.

Selma City Schools broke ground on the new School of Discovery, the first new construction of a school in a decade, in February 2024. The new building was built next to parts that remain of the former school on Washington Street, including Pickard Auditorium, which will get a complete renovation.

It will serve fifth and sixth graders.
