Spectrum Southeast in Dallas County was granted $55,481 to extend broadband service availability to 55 households in the Deerfield subdivision, which is located west of Selma.

$2.9 million in grants were recently awarded by Alabama Governor Kay Ivey to seven providers in Alabama. According to a press release from the governor’s office an estimated $18.5 million were awarded this year for broadband service.

The funds were granted from the Alabama Broadband Accessibility Fund, which was established by the legislature to assist with providing high-speed or broadband services to what the press release called “unserved” areas in the state.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs administers the program.

“The COVID-19 pandemic further emphasized how essential broadband services are to the unserved and underserved residents of Alabama,” Ivey said in the press release. “Thanks to the Broadband Accessibility Fund and broadband providers, we are making progress in ensuring that Alabamians have access to high-speed internet services, but there is no question we have a long way to go on completing this mission.”

Other providers to receive grants were:

Spectrum Southeast in Lee County

Spectrum Southeast in Tallapoosa County

Hayneville Fiber Transport Inc. (Camellia Communications) in Butler County

Millry Telephone Co. Inc. in Choctaw County/Washington County

Gigafy in Cleburne County

Cyber Broadband Inc. in Cullman County
