Income guidelines expanded for nutrition program for women with children

The income guidelines for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) have expanded, which will allow for more people to qualify, said a release from the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH). 

The program applies to women who are pregnant, has had a baby in the past six months, or are breastfeeding currently. Parents or guardians of children up to five years old may also apply. 

WIC gives food benefits to qualified applicants, as well as free nutrition education, breastfeeding support and healthcare referrals. Electronic food benefits are available from the program 

“WIC encourages families to be healthy by providing nutritious foods that support optimal growth and development," said Alabama WIC Director Allison Hatchett. "Nutritious foods help pregnant women have healthy babies and help children grow to become healthy adults."

"This year more than ever, we understand the struggles many families are facing during COVID-19. WIC is here to help Alabama’s women, infants, and children.”

According to the ADPH, WIC is open to mothers or guardians with incomes up to 185% of the federal poverty level. See below for a list of qualifications based on family size. 

Family of two - Annual Income: $32,227 - Weekly Income: $620

ADPH notes that each unborn infant counts as one in the family size. Other family sizes can be seen here.

"WIC participants must have both a limited income and a nutritional need. Families who receive Medicaid, SNAP or TANF already meet the income qualifications for WIC," reads the press release from ADPH.

"Even families who do not qualify for these programs may be eligible for WIC because of its higher income limits. If your family has lost income due to the COVID-19 pandemic, you also may be eligible."
